At House of Adorn, we're always testing new products that offer both functionality and flexibility - and gelatin stiffener has quickly become a favourite in our studio. It's an eco-friendly, user-safe fabric stiffener that works particularly well on lightweight materials like silk, chiffon, or organza, adding structure without compromising the fabric’s delicate character.
How to Prepare the Gel
To activate the gelatin stiffener:

Place a small amount of gelatin granules in a container.

Cover with tap water and allow to sit for approximately 5 minutes.

The granules will absorb the water, more than doubling in size to form a smooth gel consistency.
Using Gel Stiffener in a Spray Bottle
For a spray application, the recommended dilution is 1 part gel to 15 parts hot (not boiling) water. As an example:

Mix 1 tablespoon of gel with 15 tablespoons of hot water.

Pour into an atomiser or spray bottle.

Shake well to dissolve the gel evenly.

Allow the mixture to cool before applying to your fabric.
Application Methods
The gel stiffener can be used in a variety of ways depending on your project:

Spray directly onto lightweight fabrics (silks, chiffons, etc.)

Sponge onto hat surfaces for controlled coverage

Dip for an even, immersive coating
Always test on a small area before applying to an entire piece, especially with delicate or coloured fabrics.

For felt, apply to the inside of the hat only to avoid surface residue.

For straw and other hat bases, the concentration may be adjusted to suit.
Note: This product is best mixed fresh. While it can be stored in the fridge for a few days, we recommend preparing only what’s needed for immediate use.
The Finished Result
Once dry, treated fabrics like silk chiffon will retain a subtle rigidity, allowing for greater shape control and structural possibilities. It maintains the lightweight look and feel of the fabric while eliminating excessive fluidity - perfect for structured designs, pleating, and form manipulation.
